Each year, Penn State recognizes outstanding faculty and staff with annual awards in teaching and excellence. The faculty and staff awards ceremony is Wednesday, April 19.

Aidan Davy, the International Council on Mining and Metals’ (ICMM) chief operating officer, will give the 2017 G. Albert Shoemaker Lecture in Mineral Engineering at Penn State. His talk, “The global context of mining: the evolution from mining license to social license to social contract,” will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 7, in 26 Hosler Building on the University Park campus.

Brian Richter, director of global freshwater strategies for The Nature Conservancy and a world leader in water science and conservation, will speak about “Global Water Scarcity” at 4 p.m. Monday, April 10, in 112 Walker Building.

Meg Wieger is earning a college degree and beginning a career in the renewable energy industry. Recently, she visited Ireland to fulfill the study abroad component to her energy and sustainability policy major at Penn State’s World Campus.

The Multicultural Resource Center will host its 26th annual Senior Awards and Faculty/Staff Diversity Recognition Reception from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, in Robb Hall in the Hintz Family Alumni Center. The reception is a chance to honor faculty, staff and graduating seniors who have done a phenomenal job at promoting diversity and multiculturalism on campus.

Barry Worthington, executive director of the United States Energy Association (USEA), and a Penn State alum, will present “Sustaining Global Energy Development” at 4 p.m. Monday, April 3, in 112 Walker Building.

The Provost’s Global Advisory Council hosted its inaugural meeting on Thursday, March 23, on the University Park campus. President Eric Barron kicked off the morning session by welcoming the council members and emphasizing that the modern university must deliver more than content to our students.

Unprecedented summer warmth and flooding, forest fires, drought and torrential rain — extreme weather events are occurring more and more often, but now an international team of climate scientists has found a connection between many extreme weather events and the impact climate change is having on the jet stream.

Students can get cool rocks, minerals and fossils and learn more about nature at the annual Minerals Junior Education Day. The educational program, co-sponsored by Penn State's College of Earth and Minerals Sciences Museum and Art Gallery, is designed to encourage the interest of students in grades one through eight in the earth sciences.

Andrew Smye, assistant professor of geosciences at Penn State, has been recognized by the Geological Society of London for his early career accomplishments.
