The best class I took at Penn State was Cartography: Beyond Map Making, where I learned how to share data effectively to different audiences and how to look at design with a critical eye.
I'll always remember my favorite tradition as being the tailgating that occurs before football in perfect central Pennsylvania fall weather.
Penn State taught me that you could make the University as big or as small as you want it to be. I feel this still rings true with the alumni. You can participate in the Penn State Alumni Association events or just have brunch with old classmates.
Directly out of school, I was hired by the U.S. Census Bureau (where I am now) as a geographer, planning and processing updates for the 2010 Census.
For the prospective geography majors out there: I wish that I had taken more GIS classes when I was at Penn State.
For graduating students, I offer this: Keep an open mind for your future plans. What you did at Penn State should help your future, but not necessarily dictate it.
I bleed blue and white through my Penn State swag in my cube at work, and there's a Michigan graduate across the hall who can see it.
My favorite holiday is Halloween, of course. Who doesn't love fall and candy?
