CAUSE 2020: Leveraging Geospatial Technologies to Aid in Europe's Refugee Crisis (EMSC 470 Sp/Su/Fall 2020) is an exploration of geospatial technologies and how they can be used to solve real-world problems.
About
Students will engage with adult working professionals to prepare for geospatial careers after graduation, work with international students at a research and technical university in Europe, gain first-hand experience about the European refugee crisis, develop solutions to the European refugee crisis, visit international mapping and humanitarian organizations in Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, and the Netherlands, apply geospatial technologies to create visualizations and analyses of refugee migration data, and participate in a unique education-based research and study abroad opportunity to learn more about and utilize geospatial technologies' ability to address a humanitarian crisis.
Course Structure
- The 3-semester program includes three credits of online coursework in the spring semester, which will include mandatory online meetings.
- The summer semester is comprised of one credit of travel during May 30 - June 14, 2020 where students will visit multiple sites in Europe, including Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, and the Netherlands to learn about how geospatial technologies can be used to find solutions to the refugee crisis. Students will identify their fall project topic during the summer travel.
- Fall semester is an online 2-credit course in which students will complete research projects identified during their travel. Approved projects may be team-based or completed individually.
Travel component
- Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands (May 30 – June 14)
- Students pay for 1 credit of summer tuition plus $500 for the summer travel
Eligibility
- Enrollment is open to all College of Earth and Mineral Sciences undergraduate students who will graduate no earlier than Fall 2020. Students must enroll in all 3 course components (Spring/Summer/Fall).
